Local student architects will get the chance to help design Western Sydney Airport, as part of a Morrison government pledge to involve the community in the multibillion-dollar project.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal a design competition for the terminal will open today, with architects required to show how they will include university students who study or live in the area on the design team for the new terminal.
But Cities Minister Alan Tudge said experience and knowledge were still vital, so firms interested in the project must have experience designing an airport of similar size and complexity within the past five years.
He said to find the right architects for the once-in-a-generation project the government would undertake a competitive international search.
“Designing an airport terminal takes experience and knowledge, however we want local design students to be involved in delivering an iconic building,” he said.
“Whether it’s planning a specific part of the terminal or designing an aspect of the interior — there are endless possibilities.”
