An area manager in the childcare industry who was found in his car with his pants undone and smelling of alcohol, made an “uncharacteristic decision” when he decided to get behind the wheel while he was over four times the legal alcohol limit.

Adam Angwin, 45, of Long Jetty, pleaded guilty to high range drink driving in the Wyong Local Court.

Angwin decided to get behind the wheel at 1.45am on June 8, this year after a night of heavy drinking.

Police facts state Angwin had hopped into his car which was parked outside The Lakes Hotel, and security guards from the venue waved down passing police officers to inform them that Angwin was behind the wheel intoxicated.

He was pulled over around the corner of the pub on Copnor Ave, The Entrance and when police approached Angwin, he appeared to be dishevelled.

“His pants were undone, his clothes untidy and there was an open cold beer in the centre console drink holder and a remaining five cold beers on the passenger seat,” court documents state.

Angwin smelt heavily of alcohol, was struggling to keep his eyes open and was slurring his speech.

He was placed under arrest and was taken to The Entrance Police station.

When he got out of the vehicle, Angwin struggled to walk unassisted and was seen swaying and tripping over the gutter, court documents state.

Angwin’s lawyer told the court her client was employed in the childcare industry and was an area leader manager and travelled extensively throughout the state.

“On the evening of the offence he had been at The Lakes Hotel, The Entrance, where he had a few drinks and was advised by a hotel staff member that “it was time to go home,” his lawyer told the court.

“He then made his way to Fairview Ave where he planned to get a taxi, but a group of men started shouting abuse at him and without thinking he retreated to his car around the corner where he was seen by police almost immediately.

“He’s done a great deal of soul searching as to why he made an uncharacteristic decision.”

Magistrate Trevor Khan fined Angwin $1500 for the offence and disqualified him from driving for six months.

“Getting in this car was a really bad decision, you could have killed yourself or you could have killed someone else on the road,” Mr Khan said.

“If you kill somebody else or injure somebody else with a reading like this, you go to jail - these are serious matters.
