Two teenage girls have been arrested and charged after an alleged late-night assault at a packed Gold Coast tram station.
Police were called to the Broadbeach South light rail stop after 11pm Sunday following reports a group of teenagers had tried to steal a woman’s phone.
Footage posted to social media depicts the alleged assault that police claim followed the attempted theft, including the woman being swung around by her hair and attacked while on the ground.
The video shows numerous bystanders surrounding the altercation, with many cheering on those involved and filming on their mobile phones.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a woman in her 20s was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition with a head injury.
Police arrested a 17-year-old Nerang girl and a 16-year-old Oxenford girl at the scene.
Both have been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and are due to face Southport Childrens Court at a later date.
It is not the first time the Broadbeach South tram stop has been the scene of alleged crimes.
Police were in December appealing for information about an alleged assault at the light rail station, in which a 20-year-old man was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken jaw.
It was reported in August last year that a woman was walking towards the tram stop when a man came up behind her and tried to steal her luxury handbag. Police said the failed thief lost his balance and fell while trying to grab the bag and fled the scene empty-handed.
