The Pink Hotel Coolangatta

The company behind an Insta-famous Gold Coast hotel and burger shop is in external administration after being unable to pay its debts.

The Pink Hotel, along with its rock n roll-theme burger spot Eddie’s Grub House, in Coolangatta has entered the Small Business Restructuring process in an effort to save it from liquidation.

The venue has featured as a film backdrop for productions including series The Young Rock and the restaurant, at the time Chinese, was used for a scene in classic film Muriel’s Wedding.

The hotel and restaurant were put up for sale via an expressions of interest campaign in 2022, but did not change hands.

The company behind both businesses, Eddie’s Grub House Pty Ltd, is directed by Tweed Heads man Elliott Balk, 41, with shares also held by him via another company.

The Gold Coast Bulletin has contacted the company for comment.

A document lodged by administrator Jason Bettles said the company owed money to the Australian Taxation Office and to secured creditors including Metcash Trading, Premium Beverages, The Trustee for Cookers Trust, Oz-Tank Qld, CUB, Resimac Asset Finance, Silver Chef Rentals, Marlau Nominees, Tambavale (Qld) and Bidfood Australia.

Mr Bettles’ report said Mr Balk and his accountant had been in touch with his office to discuss the possibility of entering the small business restructuring program since February 1 this year.

ASIC records show co-founders Sam Diklich and Sam Cleary-Proctor resigned as directors in March, while Zac Manoel resigned in July 2017.

Eddie’s Grub House is being administered under the Small Business Restructuring program, which gives companies with debts of less than $1 million a last-ditch attempt to avoid collapse.

The program has been used increasingly by small business in the wake of post-Covid crackdown by the ATO and has prevented scores of companies from entering liquidation.

Local examples include Shopfit Co, operated by the partner of reality star Skye Wheatley; four top Gold Coast nightclubs operated by Artesian Hospitality Group; and fashion brand Outland Denim.
