Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to in relation to the shooting of a 19-year-old man at Helensvale on Monday.

They are calling on 34-year-old Moorooka man Daniel Todd to contact them.

Police have appealed to anyone who may know the man’s whereabouts, or has information related to the shooting, to come forward.

Gold Coast Police Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said the teen was driving a stolen white Skoda when he met a man, believed to be in his 30s, in a car park at the Helensvale Plaza shopping centre about 6.20pm.

Det Insp Ahearn said the pair, who know each other, exchanged words and the older man pulled out a sawn-off rifle.

“The victim has immediately turned and began to run and has heard a gunshot a short time later,” he said

“He has felt that he had been shot in the elbow and he’s fallen to the ground there.”

The 19-year-old Oxenford man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

It will be alleged the shooter fled the scene in a White Nissan Qashqai, which has since been recovered.

Police have released footage of a stolen grey Mercedes they are working to locate, which was in the area at the time of the shooting.

Police urge anyone who sights Daniel to not approach him and call Triple 0 immediately.

Det Insp Ahearn said the alleged gunman got back into his white Nissan and fled the scene.

He said police believed the white Skoda the victim was driving was stolen.

It is not alleged the Nissan was stolen.

Det Insp Ahearn said police had spoken to the victim who was recovering in hospital.

But he urged anyone with any information or dashcam footage to come forward.

Asked if police believed the incident was drug related, Det Insp Ahearn said: “Our minds are open to all scenarios and that will be one of the focuses of our investigation going forward.”

He said it was also believed there were other people in both cars at the time of the shooting.

Det Insp Ahearn said it was “extremely concerning” people were carrying these weapons in public places.

“If you’re sawing off a rifle down into a sawn-off version then you are not doing it for legitimate purposes,” he said.
