Heavily armed police raid Gold Coast home

A secret police investigation has been underway for more than a week into multiple public shootings on the Gold Coast, including in some of the city’s busiest suburbs.

On Sunday as many as eight bullets were fired from a high-powered rifle into the living room of a Mudgeeraba townhouse, killing a pet dog.

The Bulletin can reveal just days earlier there were more shots fired on Cypress Terrace, Palm Beach.

It’s understood a number of rounds were fired into a ute and another car overnight on Sunday June 9.

The incident occurred just metres from a busy Coles supermarket and dining precinct, with one of the targeted vehicles parked directly outside the front room of a unit.

It was towed by police for further investigation.

Residents said detectives attended the area following the incident, doorknocking homes and reviewing CCTV from neighbouring businesses.

The Bulletin understands around the same time – there was yet another incident in Surfers Paradise, also involving shots fired.

It’s unclear at this stage whether there are any links to any of the three incidents.

Queensland Police Media are yet to comment on the Surfers incident.

A police source with experience in ballistics and firearms investigations believes the Mudgeeraba incident is “by far” the most serious.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the weapon involved was a semiautomatic to discharge that many rounds in quick succession,” the officer told the Bulletin.

“The concentration of the bullets is telling.”

“Generally speaking when (shooting) is a warning, the shots are aimed high – into the top of a window – namely a bedroom.”

The officer said photos of the crime scene suggest the focus of the bullets in this case appears to be in the living area of the property.

“Again the general rule is that family, etc. are off limits. When you consider this happened at five o’clock on a Sunday morning.”

“It says to me that whoever did this had no regard for serious injury or death as a result of their actions.”
