‘I thought he was dead’: CCTV footage after man gets hit by stolen car

A man who was run down by an allegedly stolen car says he is thankful to be alive after the driver missed his head by “centimetres”.

Emergency services were called after reports of a hit and run on Wundowie St in Nerang around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

A Gold Coast police spokesman said a white Ford Ranger was reversing out of a carpark when it hit a 51-year-old man.

CCTV from the area showed what appeared to be a white ute, matching the description of the vehicle involved, speeding out of a driveway and down Wundowie St.

The 51-year-old man, named Brian told the Bulletin he was dragged several metres by the car and was knocked unconscious before it sped off.

“The car drove straight over my wrist and up over my shoulder,” he said.

“He’s just put his foot down and ran straight over the top of me.

“I don’t how he missed my head. He missed it by centimetres.

“It wasn’t a small car. It would have been game over.”

Brian and his neighbour James Percy had confronted the driver of the allegedly stolen car after hearing it leave in the afternoon.

Mr Percy said he reported the parked Ranger to police on Tuesday morning after feeling like “something wasn’t right”.

He said found the keys to the car in the back of the tray.

“I said ‘mate is this your car?’, and he said ‘yeah’ and then I went ‘oh really?’,” Mr Percy said.

“I’ve pulled the key out my pocket and waved it and said ‘well I don't know how you started it because I’ve got the key here and I know it’s stolen’”.

Mr Percy said the man then hit the accelerator and took off, hitting Brian – who was standing in the driveway – and proceeded to drag him.

“He was hanging off the front for five metres and his head hit the ground bloody hard,” he said.

“(There was a) bang.

“He was out cold. I thought he was f***ing dead.”

Paramedics assessed Brian and took him to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

He sustained a suspected fracture to his collarbone and grazing to his knees and hands.

Police believe the Ranger was stolen from Reedy Creek four days ago, on June 15.

Brian said he didn’t regret intervening with the driver and “would do it again” to “try and help” his community.

Officers are calling for anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage of the incident or moments leading up to it to contact them at 131 444.
