A man accused of shooting an innocent father in Coolangatta, firing at the Arundel Police Beat and putting parts of Nerang into lockdown for 18 hours was engaged in “intolerable conduct”, police allege.
On Wednesday, Chase Haskell was charged with the two shootings.
Police allege that about 5.10pm on June 4 he fired a bullet into a family car travelling along Tweed St, Coolangatta.
The bullet grazed the neck of a 55-year-old man sitting in the front-passenger seat. He was treated for a minor injury.
It is also alleged that about 3.45am on June 6 Haskell fired at least two shots into the Arundel Police Beat from a car.
One bullet hit the front glass door and another hit a police vehicle parked outside the Napper Rd property. No one was injured.
The Labrador man was charged with one count each of dangerous conduct with weapon and wilful damage of police property over the Arundel shooting.
In relation to the Coolangatta shooting, he was charged with one count each of dangerous conduct with weapon and assault occasioning bodily harm while armed.
Haskell is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on August 9.
He has been in custody since June 9 when he was arrested after the siege. He is also alleged to have conducted an armed robbery in Helensvale on June 3.
Gold Coast Police Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn claimed the allegations related to “intolerable conduct”.
“They are conduct that represents significant public safety risks,” he said.
Asked if there was any clear motive for the shootings, Det Insp Ahearn said: “That’s the subject of ongoing investigations.”
Det Insp Ahearn alleges the same firearm was used in both offences but said he did not want to go into detail about how the firearm was obtained.
He said investigations were ongoing.
