A tireless search and rescue effort spanning close to a month for a woman reported missing in a Gold Coast creek has been called off.
The major police operation was sparked on July 25 when a woman, described as caucasian and aged in her late teens to early 20s reportedly vanished at Biggera Creek near Hollywell Road.
Witnesses reported seeing the woman jump from a foot bridge into the water – they raised the alarm when she failed to resurface.
Gold Coast water police patrolled the area well into the evening with specialist dive crews joining the search at first light the following day.
“They’ve been running sonar equipment in the police boats, up and down the canals just looking for any anomalies,” water police officer in charge Peter Venz said in the early days of the investigation.
“We have had one report from a building site. A worker thought he saw what may have been a body in the water yesterday at about 4.30pm” Mr Venz said.
“We’ve had another report of a female spotted on CCTV semi-naked around the Morala Ave area at about 5am.”
Both reports were interrogated by officers.
Police also released a photo of a light blue floral dress that was found by officers on the night the woman vanished. It was discovered on the bridge where she reportedly entered the water.
For the past month, police have been investigating public tip-offs and routinely patrolling the creek to no avail.
On Monday, with no sign of the reported missing person, the operation was called off.
“Gold Coast Water police conducted a thorough and comprehensive search” a Queensland Police Service spokesman said in a statement.
“It could not be confirmed if the woman entered or departed the water.
“This search concluded on August 19 after no person was located.”
Police have expressed their thanks to the community for their assistance over the past four weeks.
