Jett Jay-mz Armstrong, 21, sentenced of high-speed Gold Coast chase

A man accused of driving a stolen car at an eye-watering speed on the M1 on the Gold Coast has been handed a jail sentence. Read how long he’ll remain locked-up.

A man will spend Christmas and the New Year behind bars after a high-speed joy ride on the M1 in a stolen car.

Jett Jay-mz Armstrong appeared via video link for sentencing in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, having been held in custody since his arrest over the chase.

It was alleged the 21-year-old was behind the wheel of a stolen BMW on Saturday June 29 when it was spotted by police at Logan. Officers began tracking the vehicle as travelled to Mount Gravatt and then entered the Pacific Motorway heading south to the Gold Coast.

Police alleged the vehicle reached speeds of more than 200km/h before its tyres were spiked and Armstrong took the Nerang Broadbeach Road exit.

Armstrong was arrested by officers near Bundall and charged with a string of offences including unlawful use of motor vehicle and dangerous operation, to which he pleaded guilty. His solicitor, Demi Quadrio, told the court of Armstrong had a difficult upbringing which involved foster care, homelessness at a young age and struggles with drug use. She spoke of his willingness to “reintegrate” into society and how he was remorseful for the offending, which was evidenced by his early guilty plea.

The court also heard he had spent 169 days in custody since his arrest and would remain behind bars until April after breaching a suspended sentence by reoffending.

Armstrong was handed a 12 month head sentence with immediate eligibility for parole. He has been disqualified from driving for 12 months.
