The late afternoon rain couldn’t dampen the hysteria surrounding the Gold Coast Titans first home game of the NRL season.
If anything - it enhanced it.
While the Titans fortress of Cbus Super Stadium at Robina wasn’t packed, it was still a solid turn out as fans flocked in the moment doors opened ahead of the 6.35pm match.
Donned in their blue and gold the loyalists entered the gates from 4pm to take their seats.
The cheerleaders introduced the team with Pom Poms in hand ahead of the boys striding onto the field to wild cheering from home fans.
The boos as their opposition the Newcastle Knights ran into view were deafening.
The cheers for our home boys - even more so.
The first try was of course, to the Titans, and the crowd lost it.
A standing ovation was in order as a sea of fans jumped to their feet.
A fan since the conception of the Titans, Peter Roby in the stands revealed he was nervous ahead of the game.
“Bit nervous, it’s important for the rest of the season for the fans to see a first win at home to set up the fan base,” he said.

“Surprising we’re going well - everything they’ve thrown at us we’ve scrambled and held on - that’s a good sign. We’re doing well working through with each other.”
Mr Roby said there a few errors to fix ahead of the season - drop balls with kicks.
The Titans vs Knights clash had the Wooden family in a snag -the former Knights supporters changed alliances to the Titans three years ago.
But no matter the former loyalty - it was Titans that the Woodens were gunning for now.
“We’re absolutely pumped,” Jodie Wooden said.
“We’re all really excited to be here today. This is our third year as Titans supporters - we were on the fence about joining up with the Titans. We’ve always loved the Titans, believe it or not, we used to go for Newcastle.”
Ms Wooden said Saturday night would be an interesting game for the family - but they were here for the Titans, “through and through”.
“We’ve all got our Titans gear on, we’re here for them,” she said.
When asked if there was any half heartedness, she said: “My husband’s a little bit torn but,
but he’s got his Titans jersey on.”
The man showed up.
“I’ve got four kids, and they play footy, all my girls play and my boys play, and it was just seemed like the right thing to do,” Ms Wooden said.
“We came to our first game probably four years ago. We loved it and made friends with all the fans - this is our life and we love it.”
Ms Wooden, a Mount Tamborine resident said the Titans had done so much for her kids’ school.
“After the Christmas tornado they brought their team in and gave the all the kids little scarfs and things like that, and did a little play with them and with the whole school,” she said.
“They also went to the other school up there as well - and then, just before the cyclone (Alfred) all the little kids were wearing their scarfs that the Titans gave them because it made them feel safe, which was really sweet.
“I owe a lot to the Titans.”
And the Titans delivered for their fans upon the debut home game.
In summary, the Knights lost, we won. End of story. The score was a thumping - 26-6 to the Titans.
