MUDGEERABA could become a big winner from the 2032 Olympics, with plans under consideration to turn Firth Park into a major sporting hub.

Council in early 2020 bought 54 hectares adjoining the park, which is already home to the Mudgeeraba Redbacks rugby league club, Hinterland District Netball Association and Mudgeeraba Redsox baseball club.

Division 9 councillor Glenn Tozer said money had already been allocated for new netball courts while a master plan was underway, overseen by Place Design Group, which was expected to feature cricket and Australian rules ovals, a second baseball diamond and a possible high performance centre.

“By the end of the year preliminary master planning should be ready for the community to take a look at,” Cr Tozer said.

“The first part will be going from 18 to 24 fully lit netball courts.

“There is $5m budgeted over the next two years.

“It will allow us to hold national events.”

Cr Tozer said plans would also include a 3km pathway through the site which would allow locals to walk from the Mudgeeraba Village Centre to the Hinterland Regional Park.

“We want to make it so that when you come to Firth Park it’s a centre to walk, ride or recreate,” he said.

Cr Tozer will on Saturday host an open day at the new Mudgeeraba Community Centre at the park. The centre is housed in a building refurbished at a cost of around $1.5 million, $708,000 of which came from a federal Covid recovery fund.

It includes space used by ballet, yoga, theatre and martial arts clubs and meeting rooms for local associations. The centre also includes a new office for Cr Tozer, saving council the rental costs paid at his previous location.

The open day runs from 2pm to 5pm and will include family friendly activities such as face painting, balloon artistry and fairy floss.
