Shocking images have surfaced from Nerang Fair Shopping Centre where a 68-year-old man was attacked at knifepoint on Thursday, allegedly by a young male teen.

A witness claimed they saw a teenage boy steal from discount store, the Reject Shop, at around 5pm and run out.

“An older man confronted him asking him to return the item,” the witness posted to a community Facebook group, claiming: “Not long after, the boy started fighting the man and shockingly pulled out a small knife.”

The onlooker described the incident as “troubling” with the man suffering injuries including three gashes to his face.

“I was there when the kid (allegedly) tried to fight the man and pulled out a knife,” they claimed.

“I yelled loudly for the kid to back off, but it’s true, no one else was helping.”

The person said they felt “terrible” for the man and that it was “hard to believe” such a violent incident could occur in “broad daylight” at “such a busy” shopping centre.

The incident is under investigation by police.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the suspect allegedly approached and attacked the man after he made two attempts to ask him to return the stolen items.

Police urge anyone with relevant footage to come forward.
