An “ominous” social media post of a beloved magpie and her staffy best friend has sent fans into meltdown as they beg for answers surrounding the welfare of the duo.

The owners of Molly the magpie and her best friend Peggy the staffy shared an Instagram and Facebook post on June 30, captioned: “you will always have a special place in my heart”.

Fans began to flood the comments on Instagram and asked if one of them had passed away.

“This is really ominous. Has someone passed away?” @graceellenbeale commented on Instagram.

@maricarmen — ibba — said: “It’s not fair to post something suggesting that one of them passed away. Please be clear about it. It’s not fair to make us feel sorry and sad”.

Other fans pointed out the picture had been photoshopped to include Molly.

“Why make it sound like one of them has died and why photoshop a picture of them together when there are plenty of real pictures,” @teto — petito said.

Another commenter, @sandy.dee1977 said: “I know how well they get along, but this photo is edited and not well. “You don’t have to lie and say it’s real. Everyone can see that.”

It comes four months after Molly returned home after being surrendered to the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) officials on the grounds the owners agreed to a number of conditions including “no ongoing commercial gain from the bird or its image".

Fans of the pair were angry at the post and said “don’t use people’s emotions (and) their love for Peggy and Molly to gain user interation,” @bella — lugosi123 said.

“It’s cheap and unnecessary,” they said.

Another said they “hoped this wasn’t a post to try and drive your engagement”.

Some began to question the welfare of the best friend duo, with Michelle Pizzurro commenting she wanted to see a video of Molly flying outside.

“Has the trauma from being taken away inhibited its instinct to come and go?” she said.

Other commenters even began to speculate the bird wasn’t Molly.

“This doesn’t look like Molly,” @antiguabel said.

“His feathers are different colours.”
