A section of the Gold Coast highway has been closed as emergency services evacuate the area.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) were called after reports of a gas leak near Twenty Fifth Ave in Palm Beach at around 11.30am on Tuesday.

Four fire crews are on scene where they believe a gas main was “nicked”.

It is understood the gas leak is coming from a development site, The Jefferson Palm Beach - an eight-level, 46-apartment project being built by Stokes Wheeler.

A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said they had evacuated the area and closed the southbound lane of the Gold Coast Highway.

“Motorist and members of the public are urged to avoid the area or expect long delays,” a police statement said.

A QFES spokesman said a gas examiner was on scene around 12.30pm determining the cause of the leak.
