A large-scale pop up bar above has risen above famed Burleigh Pavilion as the beachside suburb surfs into one of the biggest weekends of the year.

Burleigh Heads will be home to the World Surf League’s (WSL) Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro from Friday for up to 10 days, with thousands expected to descend to watch the cream of global surfing.

Its shock move from its home at Snapper Rocks was forced by damage to the famed surf break and foreshore from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March.

It has prompted a Burleigh transformation in the past fortnight as construction has taken over the iconic hill in anticipation.

Burleigh Pavilion owner and WSL event partner Ben May said they were “honoured” to have a front-row seat to the action with the qualifying from Friday and main event from Saturday.

Mr May said they had built a large-scale pop-up bar above the Burleigh Pavilion with a panoramic view of Burleigh Beach for all the VIP events over the 10 days.

Mr May said outside of event times, the bar would open to the public.

“We were able to organise this quickly with the assistance of Gold Coast City Council and Experience Gold Coast,” he said.

“Any event like this is not only good for Burleigh but the Gold Coast and Queensland.

“Hopefully the weather and swell turn it on for an incredible event. I can’t wait.

“When WSL first approached us, we were obviously thrilled to have one of the biggest international sporting events on the calendar right at our doorstep,” he said.

“Next year the event will return to its rightful home at Snapper Rocks but Burleigh will be a fantastic replacement this year.”

Despite obstacles, the Burleigh National Park walking track remains open but only a fraction of normal beachside parking is available.
