Wild weather tears up Byron Bay beach

New aerial mapping has revealed stunning changes to the Gold Coast’s world-famous beaches 10 years apart.

Photos taken from planes by Australian company Nearmap using its aerial camera system clearly reveal major changes to foreshores from 2011 to 2021 along the city’s coastline.

A Bulletin report in May revealed ratepayers were outlaying $10m every year to maintain the city’s golden sands, with 19 of 23 beaches “on track” to beat erosion events.

The Spit North, The Spit South, Main Beach and Kirra all fell within the “monitor” range, needing constant attention.

Following ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth in early 2022, a city spokesperson said: “There was minor scarping at northern beaches and south Burleigh.

“Sand nourishment works undertaken by the city in recent years have increased the volume of sand along the coastline, allowing beaches to better withstand erosion during severe weather events.

Nearmap provides government organisations, architectural, construction and engineering firms, and other companies, with easy, instant access to high resolution aerial imagery, city-scale 3D content, artificial intelligence data sets, and geospatial tools to assist with urban planning, monitoring and development projects in Australia, New Zealand, and North America.
