WTF: Smash fest at train station, Geelong council calendars finally arrive
In this week’s instalment of WTF, car windows have been smashed at South Geelong train station, while council calendars have finally landed in letterboxes … but not all councillors are happy.
Geelong
Don't miss out on the headlines from Geelong. Followed categories will be added to My News.
They’re the little – and sometimes not so little – things that can really irk us. We’ve asked the people of Geelong to point out the problems that irritate and exasperate and have us all saying, woah, that’s frustrating!
Well, that’s just smashing
As if commuting wasn’t painful enough already.
Imagine you’ve had a long, busy day in Melbourne.
You step off the train at South Geelong, keen to get to your car – which you parked at the recently upgraded station – and head home.
But when you arrive back at your vehicle you find out its been hit by vandals.
On Tuesday morning, two cars, a blue Holden wagon and a silver Subaru wagon, had their back windows destroyed.
The Holden also had two wheels missing.
It’s unclear when exactly the vandalism occurred or if anything was stolen from the vehicles.
It’s not exactly a glowing endorsement after the station’s major upgrade and reopening just last year.
The incident has been reported to police.
A V/Line spokesman said: “Vandalism has no place on our network and we will support any Victoria Police investigation into the matter.”
Anyone who witnesses vandalism or anti-social behaviour at trains stations should contact police.
The eagle has *kinda* landed
Much like an eagle, Geelong council’s calendar has landed, albeit in some letterboxes only this week.
As WTF reported previously, the delay, blamed on “production issues”, and poor communication of the fact people had to for the first time register to have one delivered, riled many members of the public.
And, it seems, many members of council.
We’re now reliably told that a majority of the 11-member council has complained to City Hall officers about what they understandably see as poor handling of the project.
Not only were some only made aware of the delivery change after being contacted by irate constituents who had missed the registration cut-off, they remain frustrated that just three in-person collection points were made available at service centres in Corio, Drysdale and Geelong.
What about council-run pools and libraries across the region, they asked?
And without wanting to nitpick, it was also pointed out that the thrilling Avalon Airshow is being held March 28-30, not one month later as per the calendar.
As some consolation to those behind the project, there’s always next year.
Going green … again
The Olympic pool at Kardinia Aquatic Centre appears to have turned green … again.
Keen swimmers reported the issue back in November then again in December but were reassured by staff that it was safe to swim in.
But locals have again raised concerns about the colour of the water in the pool.
One swimmer urged Geelong council to “do better”.
Council’s executive director of city life Anthony Basford said it was treating the algae issue in the pool with superchlorination and algaecide.
“Although the algae has been tested and is harmless to patrons, it can cause damage to the
pool surface and affect the overall appearance,” he said.
“This process is necessary to maintain the quality of our facilities.
“The Olympic, leaners, toddler and dive pools will be closed until Friday for water treatment.”
That’s the way it’s gonna be
Fans of one of Australia’s most iconic one hit wonders will have to wait(e) after the last-minute cancellation of a Surf Coast show.
Daryl Braithwaite, best known for his smash hit ballad Horses, was set to perform to an adoring crowd at the Torquay Hotel on Thursday evening.
The pub took to Instagram to inform the no-doubt devastated would-be showgoers.
“We regret to inform you that due to illness, Daryl Braithewaite’s sold-out show this evening has been postponed,” the post said.
“Daryl has woken up unwell.
“He is sorry for the inconvenience this will cause his fans.”
We’re unsure what happened to the great man, perhaps his voice was feeling a little hoarse.
