There are fresh calls to remove a notorious level crossing in Geelong’s north after a train hit a car at the intersection on Saturday night.
Emergency services were called to North Shore station about 8.15pm on Saturday after reports of a collision.
It’s understood an elderly woman driving a black hatchback became stuck on the tracks before a train came along the line.
She was able to exit the car before the collision.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed they were called to the incident, however no emergency medical care or patient transport was required.
The car was later towed off the tracks.
The incident forced services to be suspended on the Geelong Line, with buses replacing trains between Lara and Waurn Ponds.
Services did not resume until after 11pm.
Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) Geelong branch convener Jarred Crowe, who has called for the crossing to be removed in the past, said the incident was further proof it needed to go.
“It is extremely concerning to see the Geelong Line again suspended due to yet another accident at this danger-prone level crossing,” Mr Crowe said.
“The PTUA reaffirms the urgent need to remove this crossing, which has experienced more than its fair share of incidents.”
Late last month, a vehicle hit a boom gate at the intersection, leading to peak-hour morning delays for passengers.
In December 2023, 30-year-old Frankston truck driver Johnny Stubbs was killed at the intersection.
It is believed Mr Stubbs was out of his vehicle at the time of the crash after the truck’s trailer, which was carrying a heavy load of machinery, became stuck on the tracks.
He had just become a father for the third time. In that year there were three crashes within six months at the level crossing.
A bus also collided with the boom gates in 2020.
Geelong commuters have faced a raft of setbacks in recent weeks, including peak hour cancellations on Wednesday due to a fire near Southern Cross.
