City Hall is seeking operators to be part of a Salamanca-style weekly market in the heart of the CBD after funding was secured in the recently approved budget.

The City of Greater Geelong is releasing a request for proposals from potential operators to participate in the market that it hopes will promote unique, locally made and high calibre offerings, reflecting creativity, sustainability and the city’s status as a UNESCO City of Design.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj, who has touted the market since his re-election last November, said he was “pleased that we’re moving towards getting it up and running by spring”.

“I have spoken considerably about the need for a Salamanca-style market in central Geelong,” Mr Kontelj said.

“This market will work towards transforming Little Malop Central to be a vibrant and welcoming public space that will bring people back to central Geelong.

“This will be a big win for local designers, makers, artists, local musicians, and creative entrepreneurs, but it also supports the community during a cost-of-living crisis – people will be able purchase products directly from local suppliers.

“With the Request for Proposal out now, I encourage anyone interested in operating this market to submit a proposal.

“I look forward to hearing the announcement of the successful applicant and seeing everyone working together for an improved central Geelong.”

The project was allocated $100,000 in the 2025/26 budget which passed in June.

According to council, the market is hoping to feature a mix of high quality stallholders offering locally produced gourmet packaged foods, artisan beverages, packaged takeaway food suitable for off-site consumption, and handcrafted goods.

Some of the fare that could be available.

It is also anticipated to feature seasonal and themed elements.

The Salamnca Markets have been held every Saturday in Hobart since 1972 attracting somewhere between 25,000 to 40,000 people each week.

Potential operators have until 2pm on 25 July to submit a proposal.
