A drunk driver decided to embark on a 400km trip, forcing motorists on the Princes Freeway to avoid his erratic movements.

Portland fitter Phillip Evendon, 50, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Evendon was drinking spirits at his cousin’s house in Cranbourne on October 14 last year before he decided to drive more than 400 km home to Portland.

The police air wing spotted his car swerving along the Princes Freeway.

The car was moving across lanes, swerving onto the shoulder of the road, and changing speeds.

Other motorists were forced to merge together to avoid the erratic driving.

Officers intercepted Evendon’s car going south west on the freeway near Corio.

Evendon was breath tested and returned a 0.195 blood alcohol content (BAC) reading.

The legal BAC to drive is 0.05.

“I wouldn’t have thought I would be over,” Evendon told police.

His license was immediately suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

In court Evendon said he “did not have much to say” for his actions and did not make any excuses for his drunk driving.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie disqualified Evendon’s license for two years and sentenced him to a 12 month good behaviour bond.

Evendon will also have to undergo a road trauma seminar and a behaviour change program.
