Deakin University has welcomed an announcement by the Chinese government mandating a return to face-to-face learning.

The Chinese Ministry of Education announced on Saturday it was ordering students enrolled to study at overseas universities to return to face-to-face learning this year, with qualifications earned online not be recognised by the country.

A spokesperson for Deakin University said it welcomed the recent decision and had seen an increase in inquiries from Chinese students about on-campus unit offerings and support services since the announcement.

“Deakin’s International Connect program is designed to support commencing and returning international students to successfully transition to studying in Australia and Deakin,” the spokesperson said.

Deakin currently has 62 per cent of its Chinese students studying on campus and said it looked forward to welcoming back even more.

“With a greater focus on face-to-face learning, we will work with our partners and offices in China to facilitate their return,” the spokesperson said.

“We are currently communicating with our students to ensure they have the information and support they need.

“We will also share all advice from the Australian government to ensure any visa requirements are clear.”

Universities Australia chief executive Catriona Jackson said China’s decision would encourage students to return to Australia “which is a good thing”.

“Happening so close to the new academic year, there are obvious logistical issues that need to be worked through to ensure the smooth return of around 40,000 Chinese students who remain outside of Australia,” Ms Jackson said.

“We will be working closely with government and industry to ensure universities can quickly respond to this influx and facilitate the safe return of students from China as well as students from other nations.

“Education is our largest services export and generated more than $40bn in 2019 while boosting Australia’s social fabric.

“Working back to this position of strength we held prior to the pandemic is in the interest of universities and our nation.”
