A chilling video has emerged of a thug wielding a huge machete outside Belmont Village Shopping Centre just weeks after the sale of the deadly knives were banned.

In the footage, posted on multiple social media pages, a man wearing red sneakers and a hooded jumper can be seen brandishing the huge knife and attempting to intimidate.

One unarmed person appears unphased when approached with the weapon before receiving an outburst of expletives and vile slurs by the alleged offender.

“Are you gonna bash me or what c***?” he can be heard saying.

Leading Senior Constable Adam West confirmed Geelong officers are aware of the video and are investigating.

It’s understood no formal complaint has been made.

While it’s unclear when the incident took place, it appears to have occurred near a bus stop on High St.

As of Wednesday, the vision had been viewed more than 10,000 times, drawing the ire of some residents.

“Pulls a machete but still runs backwards,” one comment read.

“So tough.”

It’s not the first time the Belmont centre has witnessed knife crime this year, with a 17-year-old girl stabbed and hospitalised in January.

The over 10k people to view the video voiced their disgust.

A Lara school was also plunged into lockdown in May and a 24-year-old arrested for carrying a machete.

A teen allegedly wielding a knife also caused chaos at Newcomb Central Shopping Centre last week, with one woman telling the Geelong Advertiser she feared she would “get stabbed”.

It comes after the Allan government launched a nation first machete sale ban last month in the wake of a spate of knife crime, capped by a terrifying incident at Northland Shopping Centre, in Melbourne’s north.

The effectiveness of the ban has come into question on multiple occasions, with some retailers continuing to sell the knives.

The sale of machetes was made illegal in Victoria last month.

The Herald Sun was recently able to successfully order large knives from both eBay and Amazon.
