“Outstanding material” from the police needs to be disclosed in the court case of a former principal, who’s accused of historic assaults against kids.
The matter of former Yipirinya School principal Gavin Morris – who has previously indicated he is contesting the charges – was back in the Alice Springs Local Court on Monday.
Mr Morris was charged with the alleged assaults last year, and through his lawyer Luke Officer indicated he will be contesting his charge of aggravated assault at his first court mention in August.
The assaults are alleged to have occurred in 2023.
Mr Morris was stood down from Yipirinya with full pay after he was charged, but is no longer employed at the school.
In court on Monday, police prosecutor Tania McKinney sought an adjournment as there was “outstanding material” yet to be disclosed.
Mr Morris, who the court heard is bailed interstate, did not appear in court.
The former principal – who was also an Alice Springs councillor until he stepped down in March – was represented by Mr Officer on Monday.
He did not oppose the adjournment.
Judge Stephen Geary adjourned the matter to June 26 for another case management inquiry, excusing Mr Morris from appearing if legally represented.
However, Mr Morris will be back in court – and Alice Springs – this September, when a 10-day hearing on his matter is set to begin.
