Traffic chaos on Bruce Hwy near Gympie after semi-trailer jackknifes, spills fuel

The Bruce Highway has reopened at Gympie after an earlier accident saw a semi-trailer jackknife and spill 40 litres of fuel on the road, causing traffic chaos.

1.pm: The Bruce Highway has reopened at Monkland on Gympie’s south following an earlier accident which had closed the major arterial in both directions.

12pm: Emergency crews have rushed to the scene where a semi-trailer has jackknifed, halting traffic on the Bruce Highway at Monkland.

A spokeswoman from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said about 40 litres of diesel had split on the highway as a result of the crash.

One fire crew was at the scene as well as personnel from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, she said.

It was unclear if more than one vehicle was involved in the incident.

Paramedics also attended the scene, but there was not believed to be any injuries.

A spokeswoman from the Queensland Police Service said the semi-trailer had jackknifed at Geordie Rd, which is near Lake Alford on Gympie’s south.

The Bruce Highway is currently closed in both directions and southbound traffic is banked up for kilometres, currently stretching back past KFC.

Police are on the scene directing traffic and a diversion is in place onto Old Imbil Rd.
