Three young girls have been stung by suspected irukandji at a popular swimming spot on Fraser Island.

A girl was airlifted off Fraser Island because of a marine sting, believed to be that of an irukandji.

Three young girls have been airlifted off Fraser Island after suffering suspected irukandji stings at Wathumba Creek on the island’s west.

During the first incident, the Bundaberg-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew flew to the island on Tuesday morning after a primary school aged girl suffered the marine sting at K‘gari.

While the extremely venomous marine creature was not found on the child, it is understood she was stung while swimming near Wathumba Creek.

She was suffering from envenomation symptoms when the chopper landed on a sandbar close to a popular campsite, shortly after 11am.

The pilot landed the aircraft on a sandbar close to where the child had been stung while swimming near a popular campsite.

It is believed the sisters, aged five and nine, had been playing in the water at the creek on the western side of the island, when they both suffered stings to the upper body.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics treated them at the scene, before transporting them to a helipad at Orchid Beach, where they were met by the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter and crew.

The children were airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition, with their mother as an escort on the flight.
