A string of Far North beaches have shut as the weather brings in a number of Irukandji jellyfish.
Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas shut on Tuesday after an Irukandji was discovered at the beach earlier in the morning — a week after a woman was stung by the deadly jellyfish at Palm Cove during a night swim.
Lifeguard North Queensland supervisor Jay March said Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach and Trinity Beach were all shut as they monitor for Irukandji daily.
While Holloways, Yorkeys Knob and Ellis Beach are still open, Mr March warned that it is still “high risk” in those areas.
“We need a significant change in the weather (before we can reopen), we need the south-easterly winds,” he said.
“Stay out of the waters.”
