A chopper was sent to rescue a man from an isolated island offshore from Mackay hours before the start of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

RACQ CQ Rescue was tasked to Middle Percy Island, which is an island about 100km offshore south of Mackay, to rescue a man who had suffered severe heat stroke.

The temperature at Middle Percy Island today was 28 degrees.

An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said the 50-year-old man was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition and remains at the hospital for observation.

The spokeswoman said helicopters are the primary response residents of the island rely upon should any emergency occur.
