Surf lifesavers warn against complacency as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth impacts the east

A man has tragically drowned while boogie boarding after hitting a sandbank and going into cardiac arrest before being pulled from surf on the southern Gold Coast.

Multiple ambulance crews raced to the scene of the drowning off McDonald St at Coolangatta where the man was initially reported as being in a critical condition.

Tragically, attempts to revive the man have been unsuccessful and he died at the scene.

The man was believed to be aged in his 50s or 60s.

It’s understood he may have been boogie boarding at Greenmount when the incident happened.

QAS senior operations supervisor Adam Flory said the man was believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest after hitting a sandbank while riding his boogie board.

He was pulled unconscious from the surf by a bystander with the help of lifeguards.

“Resuscitation was continued but tragically the male person has died,” Mr Flory said.

All southern Gold Coast beaches have reopened after two days of big swell, but northern beaches remain closed as another king tide approaches.

Beaches south of Burleigh reopened on Wednesday morning, after being closed on Monday and Tuesday as 4-5m waves whipped up by ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth battered the southeast.

The Gold Coast City Council said beaches from Miami north would remain closed until at least midday, after the 1.9m high tide at 10.20am.

Council bulldozers are expected to move onto the beaches today to begin repairing erosion and cleaning up debris.

Meanwhile, an adult male was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition following a near-drowning in Noosa Heads.

The post-immersion incident occurred on Claude Batten Drive about 10:29am.
