A Queensland council has put down a dog after it mauled a toddler in a family home southwest of Mackay, sparking an investigation into the terrifying incident.
Paramedics were called to a Beardmore Crescent property in the small rural town of Dysart in the Isaac Region about 10.45am, Tuesday morning.
A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said a female toddler was bitten in the face and has “significant lacerations”.
The girl was taken to Dysart hospital before being flown to Townsville University Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.
An Isaac Regional Council spokesman said the dog was a Maremma and was “humanely euthanized at the property”.
“To support the family, Council officers will facilitate the respectful handling and final arrangements for the dog,” he said.
The IRC spokesman said the council was investigating the incident which occurred on a private property.
“Council extends its thoughts to those affected and reminds all dog owners of their responsibility to ensure animals are properly contained and do not pose a risk to the community including to themselves and their children,” he said.
