Little boy critically injured after being pulled from water

A toddler is in a critical condition after almost drowning at a private residence north of Brisbane.

Olympian’s father calls for mandatory swimming lessons in Qld

A toddler is in a critical condition in the Queensland Children’s Hospital after almost drowning at a private residence in Mango Hill early on Wednesday morning.

The young boy’s parents performed CPR on the child before ambulance and a high acuity response unit arrived just before 8am.

The near-drowning comes as Queensland’s drowning deaths from July 2021 to June 2022 spiked, largely due to flooding, however 16 of the state’s 84 deaths were in children aged 17 or under.

The large numbers have sparked debate around compulsory swimming lessons in Queensland state schools and whether the current programs do enough to teach kids to swim.
