An elderly woman has died in hospital of a medical episode after being involved in a serious single-vehicle crash north of Brisbane.

The 80-year-old Strathpine resident was the passenger in a vehicle that left a car park and crashed into a tree on Gympie Rd, Strathpine, about 2pm on Thursday.

She sustained leg injuries and was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where she experienced a medical episode and died.

The male driver, 87, of Strathpine, was not physically injured.

It was one of several serious crashes on Thursday.

A woman died after a “high impact” crash where a teenage driver, 16, allegedly ran a red light in a stolen Audi and slammed into her vehicle at Murrumba Downs in Moreton Bay just before 10am.

In nearby Kippa-Ring, a man suffered life-threatening injuries after a car plunged into a canal about 10.40am.

QPS chief superintendent Adam Guild said the car crashed into a canal near Kayo Stadium about 10:40am on Thursday.

“Three police officers from Redcliffe Station had to jump into that canal, rescue that male person and perform CPR,” he said.

“That vehicle was submerged and a single male occupant in that vehicle was trapped.”

Superintendent Guild praised the “heroic efforts” of the responding officers but said the man was in a critical condition in hospital.

Overnight, two men died and another six were injured after two trucks crashed and rolled, closing a major highway southwest of Brisbane.

The crash happened about 2.20am in Tregony near Warwick in the Southern Downs.
