A Gladstone refuse facility has been temporarily closed after fire broke out, burning for several hours before it was brought under control.

The blaze engulfed mulch and rubbish at the Gladstone Waste Transfer Station on Blain Drive about 12pm on Sunday.

Five fire trucks were dispatched before the fire was contained about 7pm.

The blaze cast a pall of smoke over the town’s west, and there was an eerie glow as the sun went down. Residents took to social media to share images.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement: “The fire is under control but is generating a large amount of black smoke which is being blown in a westerly direction, affecting the area near Bensted Road and Red Rover Road in Callemondah.”

Nearby residents were advised to close their windows and doors.

Gladstone Regional Council said the station would be temporarily closed while the fire burned.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
