Brisbane weather: Showers, possible thunderstorms before weekend scorcher

A wild hailstorm has rolled through Caboolture and 2000 homes are without power as warnings remain in place for several areas.

Severe thunderstorms are continuing across parts of Queensland, after a wild weather system smashed Caboolture this afternoon.

Bekka Payne said hailstones “easily” 2cm to 3cm in length fell at her Caboolture home about 1.30pm.

“Thankfully I found the thunder to be quite unnerving and unusual so as soon as I heard the ‘tings’ I ran out and put blankets on (the cars),” Ms Payne said.

Energex reported that over 2000 homes lost power as a result of the wild weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled its warning for South East Queensland at 11.45pm after a slow-moving storm hit Redcliffe and Moreton Island, but storms are still affecting parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett forecast districts.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Bundaberg, Gin Gin and Childers.

A central Queensland home was engulfed in flames after it was hit by lightning about 8pm.

Neighbours – two men aged in their 60s and 30s – who rushed to try and save the home at Wowan, west of Gladstone, were injured after receiving an electric shock from a metal railing.

They were taken to Mount Morgan Hospital in a stable condition.

Further north, Dairy Creek near Rockhampton recorded 52mm and Springsure had 50mm.

The heaviest rain fell across the Fraser Coast, with 60mm recorded at Marodian and 55mm at Gayndah.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster, Helen Reid said an upper trough will move across southern Queensland today, producing showers and thunderstorms.

“But it looks like Brisbane will escape the worst of it today,” Ms Reid said.

“Expect thunderstorm activity more north of Brisbane.”

“There’s still a possibility across the south east but the more exciting storms are north of Brisbane – Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay, Burnett and Capricornia”.

A high fire danger remains present throughout the state, but could be downgraded after forecast rainfall Thursday.
