A 12-year-old boy has suffered a serious head laceration after an accident on a ride at Movie World.
The boy was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition after hitting his head on The Looney Tunes Carousel.
The incident happened just after 1pm at the Oxenford theme park, which was packed with school holiday crowds.
Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Bill Houghton said the 12-year-old boy had suffered a “significant laceration to the back of the head”.
Mr Houghton said the injury was non-life threatening but the boy was “extremely lucky”.
“Obviously people can die from head injuries but he’s extremely lucky and he’s in the best care at the moment,” he said.
Mr Houghton said an off-duty nurse had treated the boy at the scene and he was conscious, alert “and in good spirits” when paramedics arrived.
Mr Houghton said details of how the accident happened were “a bit sketchy”.
In a statement, Movie World’s parent company Village Roadshow Theme Parks said they had launched an investigation into the accident.
“Our thoughts are with the guest and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery,” the statement said.
“We pride ourselves on our standards of care and quality and an investigation is being conducted as a matter of priority into the exact cause of the incident. In an abundance of caution the ride has been closed while we understand how the incident occurred.”
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said his thoughts were with the injured boy and his family.
“Work safety officers and police will manage the incident and council will make no further comment,” he said.
