A wild night out across Toowoomba came to a shocking end after an electrician smashed a glass door and police car at Fitzy’s, which caused $3316 in damages.

Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told Peter Leslie Sutrin was drinking at a mate’s Christmas party before the group of friends decided to visit a number of bars on Saturday, December 3 - including Fitzy’s on Margaret St.

Police prosecutor Cameron Francis said the night took a turn at 1.40am when Sutrin began dancing on table tops and lifting his shirt up.

Mr Francis said the 33-year-old refused to get down and when security attempted to grab him, he fled backwards, falling from the table and knocking a stool into a glass door.

The glass shattered, but Francis got back up on the tables and ran back and forth in an attempt to escape the security guards.

Eventually the guards detained the business owner and handed him over to police.

Mr Francis said officers handcuffed Sutrin and put him in the back of the police car, where he then kicked out the back door and window.

Mr Francis said Sutrin became distressed in the car because he could hear his friends, in particular a girl named Ingrid, arguing with officers.

The court was told the sparky wasn’t a regular drinker and had recently separated with his wife, which caused him personal turmoil, and extra work pressure as she had worked for his business.

Magistrate Louise Shephard noted Sutrin had no criminal history and he was genuinely remorseful for his actions, which were out of character.

Ms Shephard accepted that Sutrin’s drinking contributed to the crime but said it was aggravated because the police car was out of action for some time.

In court on Tuesday, January 31, Sutrin pleaded guilty to damaging a police car, damaging business property, public nuisance within a licenced premises, and was fined $900.

Sutrin was also ordered to pay $2116 to the Queensland Police Service, and $116 to Fitzy’s.
