Tropical Cyclone Alfred is no longer expected to make a beeline for the Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley regions, according to the latest weather forecasts.

However rainfall from the system could see the regions receiving between 30mm to 105mm of rain over a few days late next week.

As of Sunday afternoon, Toowoomba is forecast to endure strong winds and rainfall from Wednesday, with the heaviest falls, up to 35mm, predicted for Thursday.
From Wednesday through to Saturday, the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest report has Toowoomba receiving at the most 90mm of rain.

More rain is expected to fall east of Toowoomba, with up to 113mm hitting the Lockyer Valley between Wednesday and Saturday.

Before noon on Sunday, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said Cyclone Alfred was no longer forecast to make landfall near Brisbane before tracking west to Toowoomba as a tropical low.

The bureau’s latest report has a weakening Cyclone Alfred travelling south about 515 km east of Rockhampton and 370 km east northeast of Bundaberg.

“Tonight it is forecast to turn southeast and move further away from the Queensland coast while weakening a little further,” the report stated.

“Alfred is then expected to slow down and is likely to turn westward from Tuesday,

moving back towards the southern Queensland coast.”

“Alfred should continue moving to the south today and then models are consistent

in the influence of the strengthening upper trough steering Alfred to the

southeast away from the coast.

“From Tuesday there is increasing confidence that Alfred will track westwards towards the southern Queensland coast as the next mid-level steering ridge builds to the south. Much of the guidance favours landfall on Thursday along the southeast Queensland or far northern NSW coast.”
