Public housing tenants will now have a “supportive landlord” with a not-for-profit taking over the management of 100 homes from the government in the Red Centre capital.

Announced on Monday afternoon, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development has handed over the Alice Springs homes to Community Housing Central Australia (CHCA).

Department chief executive Luccio Cercarelli said the transfer won’t impact tenants or their homes “on a day-to-day basis”.

“Tenants will also benefit from improvement works to the homes as part of the transfer and a more streamlined repair and maintenance service,” he said.

“Community Housing Central Australia provides a valuable experience for public housing tenants by delivering a quality, cost-effective and efficient housing service led by local people. We are proud to be working in partnership with them.”

CHCA currently manages 400 properties across the Alice Springs region, 30 of which are former public housing dwellings for the Territory government.

CHCA chief executive Frances Paterson-Fleider said the not-for-profit will be a “supportive landlord”.

“As a supportive landlord, our aim is to see our tenants thrive in healthy, safe, affordable and liveable homes,” she said.

“Tenants are at the heart of what we do and the CHCA staff look forward to working with our new tenants in the coming months.”

In the release, the department said nearly 800 homes are currently in the process of or have been transferred from the Territory government to community housing providers.

“The Northern Territory Government is supporting the growth of the community housing sector in the Territory and is working with community housing providers to establish a model that promotes positive outcomes for tenants and local communities,” Mr Cercarelli said.
