Couple given Katherine court date after alleged Alice Springs escape

October 21, 12pm: A couple’s alleged mad dash to the Top End from the Red Centre has ended with a date with the judge, police say.

Police said 27-year-old man – with the help of a “female associate” – fled from a “facility he was required to reside at in Alice Springs” at 3.30pm on Saturday.

The man allegedly cut off his electronic monitoring device before getting into a Toyota Prado, driven by the woman, and fled.

The woman is also alleged to have cut off her monitoring device.

“An arrest team, including members from General Duties, Crime, and the Dog Operations Unit, was dispatched to locate the offender, who actively evaded apprehension throughout the evening,” police said in a statement on Monday.

The couple headed north, where they were spotted in Katherine by Darwin Traffic Operations officers, who received an automatic number plate recognition alert.

Tyre deflation devices were deployed by Katherine police officers, which resulted in the arrest of the duo, an NT Police spokesperson said.

The man and woman faced Katherine court on Monday.

The man was charged with failing to obey officers’ directions, driving unlicensed, and driving with a prohibited drug in his body.

The woman was charged with breach of bail.

Teens behind alleged assault and robbery of woman remain on the run

October 21, 11am: The teens who allegedly bashed a woman in a drain at Tennant Creek on the weekend remain on the run, according to police.

About 11.40pm on Saturday, a 33 year-old woman was allegedly chased into a large drain on Blain St, Tennant Creek, by three kids, police allege.

It is alleged the woman was assaulted and her personal items and cash stolen.

The youths fled the scene, after which the victim managed to flag down a passing vehicle for help.

The victim was then taken to Tennant Creek Hospital for medical treatment.

On Monday, NT Police said the alleged offenders remained outstanding, and investigations were ongoing.

Woman assaulted leaving Tennant Creek service station

October 20: A woman was taken to Tennant Creek hospital after an assault at the BP service station just before midnight on Saturday.

Police said the woman, 33, was leaving the service station at about 11.40pm on Saturday when she was approached by three female youths who pushed her into a drain and assaulted her.

Alice Springs watch commander Senior Sergeant Thomas Chalk said the youths stole property including a small amount of cash from the woman, who was taken to Tennant Creek hospital for treatment.

He said police were looking for three women, believed to be teenagers, and that investigations were ongoing.

He said Alice Springs police were also looking for the driver of a car that crashed as it was descending Anzac Hill late on Saturday.

Sen Sgt Chalk said it appeared the vehicle was making its way down Anzac Hill about 11.47pm on Saturday when the driver lost control and travelled off the sealed road over a number of large rocks, before coming to a stop when it struck a large metal pole.

He said the vehicle “was rendered inoperable” and that the driver and any passengers inside fled the scene.

He urged members of the public with information on either incident to contact police on 131444.
