A TASMANIAN man has been extradited to Cairns over an alleged killing in Mareeba in 2019.

Kyam Keith Broadby, 25, was arrested on March 8 in Tasmania on a Queensland arrest warrant for the charge of murder.

Mareeba detectives travelled with the man from Tasmania to Cairns.

His matter was mentioned in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, where he was represented by duty lawyer David Jenkins.

Police originally charged Mr Broadby and Riley Jack Davis with grievous bodily harm after an incident at the Mareeba Showgrounds in July 2019, which left Ayr resident and show worker Nathaniel Wailu, 35, fighting for his life in the Townsville hospital with critical head injuries.

Both were granted bail after their first court appearance.

Police allege that around midnight on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, following an altercation, Mr Wailu was assaulted and located unconscious at the rodeo grounds on Mareeba Dimbulah Road.

Mr Wailu died in hospital on July 15, 2019, leading to Mr Davis, who was 26 at the time, having his charge upgraded to murder.

Mr Davis was granted bail in the Cairns Supreme Court on July 26, 2019, and denied any involvement in the offence.

All charges against Mr Davis were discontinued in October 2020.

Mr Jenkins told Magistrate Sandra Pearson he was seeking, given the charge, a brief direction and an adjournment to the committal call-overs.

“I’m assuming the brief is close to done given it’s taken a long time to get to this point, so, six weeks?” Magistrate Pearson asked, directing that the prosecution’s brief of evidence be disclosed to Mr Broadby’s legal representative by April 20.

Mr Jenkins told the court his client had a grant from Legal Aid and that his office would continue to act for Mr Broadby.

He made no application for bail and Mr Broadby’s appearance was not required.

The matter was adjourned to April 27.
