POLICE have confirmed the outcome of an investigation into a dog attack which led to the tragic death of a Far Northern toddler, revealing fresh details of the dog involved.

Two-year-old Talan Peters suffered severe head injuries during the horrific attack by a family dog at his Mena Creek home on January 29.

The toddler was placed into an induced coma after doctors were able to restart his heart at Innisfail Hospital.

He was then flown to Townsville Base Hospital and immediately underwent brain surgery.

However, his life support was switched off on February 1.

Following the heartbreaking incident, an Innisfail Police spokeswoman confirmed there were three dogs on the property “all described as pig dogs”, and that two of them had been destroyed. However, it is still unknown why the second dog had been destroyed.

The spokeswoman said no charges would be laid over the incident.

Although police could not speak on the lead up to the incident, it is understood Talan’s family was at home at the time of the incident, and that he had taken food with him into the backyard. When mum Amber Stewart realised he was no longer inside, she found him outside with one of the dogs standing over him.

A relative of the family started a GoFundMe to support Talan’s mum Amber Stewart, and was hoping to raise $20,000 to cover the toddler’s funeral costs.

“All funds of this page will be going directly to Talan’s family to help pay for his funeral and allow them time off work to grieve the loss of their child without the added financial stress of providing for their two beautiful boys Lucas and Kaden at home,” the description read.

On February 11, the fundraiser had accumulated $24,712.
