Cairns dog registration: Council cracks down on lapsed pets
About 780 Cairns dog owners whose registrations have lapsed have been warned to expect a knock on the door.

A KNOCK on the door could be imminent for dog owners who let registrations lapse as Cairns Regional Council heads towards a more enthusiastic approach to chasing up stragglers.
Planning and environment general manager Martin Garred said the department had changed the way it enforced the rules.
“For the first time, we’ve started proactively tracking dog registrations,” he said.
“Those renewals were due on July 31, we’ve currently got around 780 dog owners who haven’t renewed their dog ownership as yet.
“There are sometimes legitimate reasons … for example, they might have moved outside the region and forgot to tell us.
“This is a tool that we can use to really follow up on some of those that are outstanding.”
Statistics lodged in this week’s council meeting showed a worrying month-on-month trend of increases in dog attacks was finally on the slide.
Animal management officers responded to 67 dog attacks in September – an 18 per cent drop on the previous month.
Barking complaints took a 13 per cent dive with 109 lodged in September.
