Olivia Azzopardi aka Poh Terri’s new exhibition Bite me at Crystalbrook Bailey

A CAIRNS artist has created a new exhibition to showcase the dangerous and unique animals of the region and how people should respect them.

Olivia Azzopardi also known as Poh Terri will display her exhibition Bite Me at Crystalbrook Bailey until November 30.

“I am a local of Cairns so my basic inspiration is my surroundings which is inevitably my environment,” Ms Azzopardi said.

“It’s based on the delicacy of dangerous and unique animals of Far North Queensland.

“The show is called Bite Me, it’s kinda like how we interact with animals and how we aren’t the only ones that are a part of the land and how we have to respect which animals we come in contact with.”

Ms Azzopardi said her nine pieces were very unique.

“Each piece the shape or form of the object is based on the characteristics or habitat of that animal,” she said.

“I have another arts practice in glaze technology so it’s based on my process and experimentation in glazes.

“Each piece is porcelain and its wheel thrown so on the pottery wheel, I have thrown and assembled each piece to make them different.”

The art of pottery has been a passion of Ms Azzopardi’s for more than 10 years.

“I am obsessed. It’s the inevitable discovery of what I can create next or how I can build onto that shape in a different way,” she said.

“It’s cathartic and relaxing, because it’s so hands-on; it’s a very therapeutic form of practice.”

Ms Azzopardi said she hoped people took away a few messages from the exhibition.

“I’ve got drawing and ceramics incorporated in the same object. I want people to understand ceramics is more than clay,” she said.

“I hope they take some kind of environmental message from it.”

Ms Azzopardi has a different approach to clay.

“I have a very minimal and reductive approach towards the execution of my work,” she said.

“I tend to simplify the form of clay. Allowing room and space to create a three dimensional canvas to draw on.”
