Are Cairns’ fishermen jinxed?
Moving into the weekend and the beginning of next week the region will bask in a spell of perfect weather for getting out over the deep blue and chasing that prize catch.
But there is one glaring problem.
The coming patch of light winds and hot weather will coincide with the closure of coral reef fin fish fishing on Saturday, October 25, leaving just one day for boaties to hook their bait and let loose their reels.
Brett Young was out early but was surprised by how quiet it was at the boat ramp with the calm weather.
“Every good day is a fishing day for me and when it’s calm it makes getting out wide easier,” he said.
“It was quiet when I left but it was getting busy by the time I got back. Maybe people were caught unawares due to the weather not being great lately.”
While the fishing restrictions didn't bother him he was sure people would be looking to capitalise on Friday.
“I agree fishing stock needs to be managed, but there will be a million boats out tomorrow, it'll be a race out.”
This is the second year in a row that a weekend of prime fishing weather has been met with the slap in the face from restrictions.
The closure this year runs from October 22 to October 26 and then again from November 21 to 25.
A high chance of showers and a chance of a thunderstorm for Friday will round out the week, with 8-15mm of rain expected.
The wetter weather will be clearing to a partly cloudy Saturday and clear and sunny on Sunday.
And it will be hot, with highs of 33 over the weekend rising to 34 by mid-next week.
Overnight low temps will be 23 to 24 degrees.
