Mungalli Creek’s organic ice cream shop set to open in the Cairns CBD

Just in time for summer, a much-loved brand is bringing its organic ice-cream, seasonal produce and locally roasted coffee to the Cairns CBD.

Regional Flavours: Mungalli Creek Dairy

IN a Cairns-first a renowned Atherton Tablelands biodynamic business is set to showcase locally made produce including a recently released ice-cream range from a new farmhouse style retail outlet in the CBD.

A soft opening of Mungalli Creek Biodynamic Dairy’s new venture called The Dairy has been slated for Thursday and at a grand opening on Saturday customers buying an ice cream waffle cone will receive a second one free.

In December last year the dairy announced the release of a tropical-inspired ice cream range made possible by a major expansion of a Mungalli-based processing plant.

Flavours include Broken Nose Vanilla, Belgian Chocolate, Espresso Coffee, Poppi’s Banana Choc Chip, Mango Sherbet and Organic Frozen Yoghurt.

The Dairy team leader Beth Watson said a team of eight workers had been hired and the finishing touches were being added to the new shop ahead of the grand opening in the CQUniversity Cairns Square building.

The new range of tropical inspired ice cream flavours by Mungalli Creek Biodynamic Dairy will be available at the new CBD outlet.

“We started making ice cream (and thought) why not create a brand hub in Cairns,” she said.

“We thought it would be fantastic to have this local provedore hub.

“We are going to be selling the ice cream but we are (also) going to sell our yoghurt and cheese.”

Using seasonal and locally sourced produce The Dairy will also be serving local espresso by Social Coffee created in a custom wrapped La Marzocco machine.

“(Plus) we will have freshly made sourdoughs and fruit toast, open melts with mushroom and garlic butter and cheeses,” she said.

“The new (Esplanade dining precinct) has just been finalised and people can get a takeaway a cheese platter and go and sit on the Esplanade to eat.”

Continuing the brand’s clean and sustainable image, Ms Watson said the new shop was being marketed as a healthy and wholesome offering for Cairns consumers familiar with Mungalli Creek products.

“We really wanted to highlight that farmhouse shop, that was the feel we are looking for,” she said.

“We are a down to earth farming family and that’s what we wanted to create here.

“We want it to feel like grandma’s house, and it’s not like she is going to be (serving) all those (food additive) numbers. It’s going to be fresh and delicious food.”
