Mathew John Burrell, 41, hit with six charges after allegedly fleeing RBT

A 41-year-old man has been charged with the serious assault of a police officer after he allegedly fled an RBT site with an officer still partially inside a vehicle he was driving.

A 41-year-old man has been charged with the serious assault of a police officer after he allegedly fled an RBT site with an officer still partially inside a vehicle he was driving.

Kawana man Mathew John Burrell appeared in Cairns magistrates court by video link from the watch house.

The man was a rear passenger in a vehicle that was intercepted by officers for a roadside drug test around 9.10pm Lyons Street on January 4.

When officers were attempting to question him he allegedly jumped into the drivers seat and pushed the female driver from the vehicle.

The man allegedly attempted to drive away with an officer partially inside the vehicle.

The man then allegedly fled on foot from the vehicle as officers attempted an arrest.

Highway Patrol officers caught up with the man in nearby mangroves, where he was arrested.

Following a search of the vehicle and the man, officers allegedly located a knife and a quantity of drugs.

Mr Burrell was charged with serious assault police, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of a knife in a public place, failing to dispose of a needle and failing to appear.

Mr Burrell was refused bail and was remanded in custody on a return to prison warrant.

His matter was adjourned until February 3.
