THE grieving family of one of the city’s most popular blokes have been awaiting a coroner report to give his cause of death and allow them to arrange a funeral.
In the meantime, they could use some help.
Cairns dad Hugh Price is believed to have suffered a medical episode which caused him to fall and hit his head more than a week ago.
The exact cause of death will be unknown until the coroner issues its findings, but an online fundraiser to help Mr Price’s young family has already raised more than $8000.
Organisers Erin Ley and Matt Barr said Mr Price’s children, Jake, Sharday and Laylah, were devastated by their loss.
“On top of the pain of losing their mum Kate in 2019, the sudden loss of Hugh on Saturday, February 5 has left them without their loving and wonderful parents.
“This fundraiser is set up to ease some of the burdens they will face at this awful time.”
The pair went on to say Mr Price was an absolute champion, a gentle giant and a true gentleman – not to mention the Queensland Maroons biggest supporter.
“His untimely passing has left a giant hole for his family and friends, the Cairns community and all of those who have had the privilege of knowing him,” they said.
Mr Price’s brother, Tony, has also issued a heartfelt statement on behalf of Mr Price’s children and siblings.
“In particular, we thank Hugh’s friends and work colleagues for organising this GoFundMe page,” he said.
“This is a practical and meaningful way to support Hugh and Kate’s children at this most devastating time.
“We are still awaiting the coroner’s report and focusing on this at the moment.
“Once we receive this information and Hugh is released back into our care we can move forward with the funeral arrangements.
“Once again we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The Price Family.”
Tributes came from famous actors, businessmen and sporting legends in the wake of the Cairns security guard’s death.
Queensland State of Origin great Gavin Allen said Hughie’s word was his bond.
“No-one ever said a bad word about him and he never did about anyone else either,” he said.
