A dramatic early morning crash in Mooroobool has left a neighbourhood shaken, with one resident now considering leaving the region after a stolen car flipped into a neighbour’s front yard.

After being woken by a “loud crash” at 3am on Wednesday morning, Mooroobool resident Jay Ah Yek rushed outside to find the front fence destroyed and a car flipped onto its roof.

“The car was completely upside down, and there were young men inside, struggling to get out,” he said.

In light of the recent crash and the ongoing rise in crime around Cairns, Mr Ah Yek said he is seriously considering a move to Brisbane.

“We’ve been thinking about moving to Brisbane due to the increase in crime,” he said.

“It’s only a matter of time until something happens to us.”

Being raised in Cairns, he said while the area had “changed so much” since 2003, his primary concern was the safety of children in the area, who he fears could be injured - or worse - if “no action is taken”.

“This area is filled with kids, and they could potentially get injured or even killed if nothing changes,” Mr Ah Yek said.

“I’ve been raised here, it’s really changed a lot.”

He described the collision as “incredibly loud and alarming”.

“There were young blokes kicking and struggling to get out of the vehicle,” he said.

“Two of them were limping, and one looked in shock. I was surprised none of them died in the crash.”

Despite the chaotic scene, Mr Ah Yek said he was relieved no one had sustained life-threatening injuries.

However, he found the experience deeply frustrating.

“I’m glad no one was hurt in the process,” he said.

“But it’s not just frustrating for me, but for the rest of the nearby neighbourhoods as well.”

Queensland Police Service confirmed a Kia Sorrento had been travelling along Craig Street in Mooroobool before it left the road and rolled.

Authorities said they believe three people fled the scene before they arrived.

The investigation is ongoing.
