Drivers divided over major Sheridan Street intersection changes aimed at safety

A simple road marking change has split social media between drivers who love and hate the new Sheridan Street layout.

Traffic conditions on the southbound left lane of Sheridan St, Cairns, have changed between Upward St and Minnie St. The left lane is now left-turn only.

Motorists are divided over the new Sheridan Street intersection changes, with some slamming them as “pointless” and others saying they are “way better.”

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has explained the line-marking changes which created a new dedicated right-turn lane at the Florence St intersection and left-turn only lane at the Minnie St intersection.

A department spokeswoman said upgrades were designed to improve safety and relieve congestion during the morning and afternoon peaks.

“Line marking changes at the Florence Street intersection were made to provide a second dedicated right-turn lane from Sheridan Street,” she said.

“Turning traffic can only proceed on a green arrow.

“The left-turn lane on the northbound side of Sheridan Street has been extended to accommodate additional vehicles.

“Consequently, the Minnie Street intersection has been changed to a left-turn-only lane to align with the lane adjustments at the Florence Street intersection.”

People shared their thoughts on social media, with some praising the changes and others claiming they had caused congestion.

“Tell me why a left only lane was required at Minnie street when it now reduces the ability to travel through that lane to the lights at Munro Martin park where everyone turns right?” Jack Frost asked.

“Madness like the right turn arrows everywhere that stay red when there is absolutely no traffic?”

Another user labelled the changes “pointless”.

“t’s stupidity what they are doing with traffic flow around cairns, “ Mitchell Smith said.

Matthew White said the changes were “way better”.

“Stops people flying up the left and cutting across to the right for Mulgrave Rd,” he said.

Works on Sheridan St were recently completed as part of the Queensland Government’s Safer Roads Sooner Program which aims to address issues at potentially high-risk locations.
