A 51-year-old Cairns man has appeared in court after allegedly filming up the skirts of women and young girls throughout Cairns Central.
Police allege that Ian Richard Duncan filmed up young women’s skirts using a camera hidden in his umbrella on the weekend of January 14 and 15.
He has been charged with 14 counts of making observations or recordings in breach of privacy – genital or anal region.
At the time Cairns Central centre manager Christie-Lee Jackson confirmed the seriousness of the issue.
“We’re currently investigating the alleged incident with local authorities,” she said.
“As always, the safety and wellbeing of our customers, retailers and staff is our top priority.”
Mr Duncan was taken into custody, charged and released on bail.
On Thursday, February 2, he made a brief appearance in Cairns Magistrates Court before Magistrate Susan Warrington.
The court heard he did not have legal representation and had not yet lodged his Legal Aid application, and as that process normally takes four weeks the matter was adjourned to March 9.
As Mr Duncan left the court he shielded his face from waiting media.
